This Term, our OLR students embraced the beauty of our coastal environment through the much-anticipated Term 4 Beach Program. This hands-on initiative combined physical education with vital lessons in ocean safety, fostering skills and confidence in the water.
For our Year 4 and 5 students, the program included the Learn to Surf program with North Caloundra Surf School. Across several action-packed days, students began with boogie boarding and ocean safety awareness before advancing to surfing lessons. This unique opportunity not only taught them new physical skills but also instilled an appreciation for active lifestyles and safe practices by the sea.
Meanwhile, our Year 6 students participated in a comprehensive Beach Awareness Program, where they delved deeper into surf life-saving techniques, surf safety, and surfer awareness. With sunny skies and perfect waves, they practised catching waves, staying safe in the ocean, and developing essential beach skills—while enjoying plenty of fun on the sand and in the surf.
Adding to the excitement, a group of Year 5 and 6 students had the opportunity to compete in the Pacific Pulse Surfing Competition. Their commitment to training twice a week throughout the term, as well as in their own time, paid off with some incredible achievements. OLR secured 4th place overall and 3rd in the tag team event, with standout performances from Angie, the runner-up for the 11-year girls' champion, and Isla, who earned an encouragement award.
Congratulations to all our students for their effort, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Whether riding waves for the first time or representing OLR in competition, you’ve made us all incredibly proud.
